How to Use Air Fresheners for Diffusion Experiments
- 1). Stand at one end of the room, and set students in three rows -- one row at the opposite end of the room, and two more spaced a third of the way and two thirds of the way across the room. Keep one to three students at the front of the room with you.
- 2). Blindfold all students. This is necessary so that they will not be swayed by seeing the reaction of the students around them.
- 3). Instruct students to raise their hands when they smell something different in the room.
- 4). Instruct one of the students at the front of the room to take note of exactly what the stopwatch says when the first person in each row raises a hand. Instruct the second student to take note of exactly what the stopwatch says when the last person in each row raises a hand.
- 5). Spray the air freshener into the air for two seconds, and then stop. At the same time, instruct the third student to start the stopwatch.
- 6). Note the data that students collected. Discuss with the class what the data show about diffusion.
