How to Do a Cover Letter for a Job Resume
- 1). Research the organization and analyze the job requirements. Carefully read the job description, noting the skills and experience the employer is looking for.
- 2). Remember to include name, address, phone number and email address as part of the heading. Naturally the cover letter must be dated and addressed to the correct person within the organization you are applying to.
- 3). Write an introductory paragraph. Ensure that you clearly state what position you are applying for. Try to stay away from over-used openings such as "Please accept my application for the position of ." Outline your current situation and explain why you are seeking change. Tailor your information to make it as relevant to the organization as possible.
- 4). Focus on your qualifications in the second section of your cover letter. This section should answer the question: Why should we hire you? Your goal is to emphasize to an employer that you are a potentially valuable addition to their organization. Highlight skills that the employer is looking for using the information that you previously researched. Discuss your experience and relate to the reader what you can bring to their organization using two or three examples. These examples should reference specific projects, accomplishments, transferable skills and versatility. Saying you possess excellent customer service skills is not enough, you must provide specific examples that highlight these skills.
- 5). Conclude your letter by expressing your interest in this position. Provide your contact information and thank the employer for their time and consideration. You should also let the employer know how you plan to follow up on your application.
