A Brief Guide to Popular Attractions in North Yorkshire

17
The area of North Yorkshire has a wide range of regional attractions for visitors and people on their holidays, with some of the best countryside scenery to be found in England.
Yorkshire is the largest county in England, hence its administrative divisions of South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
The county of Yorkshire is widely regarded to be among the greenest in England, due to its northerly proximity and wide open spaces of unspoiled countryside, with the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors both being located in this beautiful part of the country.
So, it comes as no surprise to learn that many of the locals and visitors to this part of the UK refer to Yorkshire by the nickname of 'God's Own County'.
Here is a brief historical and cultural guide to the area of North Yorkshire and some of the key places to visit and add to your itinerary when you come to one of the most breathtaking destinations in England for a holiday or a well-earned break.
Whitby The picturesque seaside town of Whitby is located in the Yorkshire constituency of North Riding.
Historically, Whitby was known for its shipbuilding industry but, as is the case with many places in the North, this has long since gone.
It is also known for its Viking heritage, as it was visited by historical Viking raiders at various times.
The town's name is Norse and literally translates as 'white settlement', because of the nearby limestone cliffs.
Today, Whitby is known as a popular holiday destination which offers visitors a scenic coastal location with easy access to many of the local attractions and a well-preserved harbour.
Scarborough The much larger and relatively modern town of Scarborough is the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast.
The oldest part of the town is situated around its harbour area and Scarborough is the most annually visited tourist location in all of Yorkshire.
Like Whitby, Scarborough has a rich history which takes its historical influences from the Vikings and the Saxons, with a brief period when the town was inhabited by the Romans.
Scarborough is one of Yorkshire's 'renaissance towns', as its popularity in tourism started in the Victorian period and still thrives today.
North York Moors One of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK is that of the North York Moors (or the North Yorkshire Moors, as it is sometimes referred to).
The North York Moors is also designated as a UK National Park, which has two primary areas that consist of a Limestone belt and a coastal belt.
The Moors are now a protected region and this area's main source of income is generated through agriculture and tourism.
