What Do the First Six Digits of a Telephone Number Mean?

53
If you have ever tried to determine where a mystery call is coming from, you might already know something about area codes and reverse phone lookups.
The area code makes up the first three digits of a phone number and can tell you a lot about the location of call; the next three digits can help you place the call even more specifically.
While there are resources like reverse phone lookups available for those needing personal data, you can find much of this information out yourself just by examining a phone number.
Most people are somewhat familiar with the idea of area codes.
Those that live in larger, more populated areas like Southern California are probably used to calling multiple area codes, and receiving calls from even more of those area codes.
The majority of states only have four or five area codes, however, consequently some people do not think of them as being key in locating a call.
The fact is that if one is calling within America, Canada, the Caribbean, and a few other territories, the area code is the first clue as to where your caller is.
Area codes refer to general geographic areas, usually specific to towns, counties, or parts of a state.
For example, area code 213 is in central Los Angeles, while area code 318 refers to all of North Louisiana.
The size of the area covered by an area code can differ dramatically by population, but it can tell you a lot about where it is located.
Reverse phone lookups can help you learn more about a specific area code.
Furthermore, the next three digits (the prefix) of a phone number can help locate a call even more specifically within an area.
For example, if you receive a call from the area code 817 in North Central Texas, a phone number with the prefix 924-XXXX lets you know that it is someone located in Fort Worth, Texas.
These first six digits can always tell you the city and state from which the call originates, and sometimes even more specifically, depending on the population of the area.
Now if you have an unknown number you need information on, reverse phone lookups are a great way to locate additional information about the area code and prefix.
After determining where the call is coming from, you can also use reverse phone lookups to find out more about the caller.
If you want to trace a phone number, just enter the ten-digit number in the search field and wait for the results.
