Bike to Jaanchies and try the iguana stew. Jaanchies is a short and pleasant bike ride fromWestpunt at the west end of Curacao, where you can rent bikes. Legend has it that iguana stew is the most powerful aphrodisiac and Jaanchie himself will warn you to lock up your wife, husband, or significant other when you’re not around after he or she eats it. It tastes like chicken and washes down nicely with fresh-squeezed lemonade as you listen to Curacao’s national bird, the trupial, chirp from your two-top at this family-owned restaurant.•No. 2 - Curacao Top Activities
Snorkel Klein Curacao. The boat ride to Klein Curacao, a small island off the southeast shore of Curacao, is worth the rocky trip once you see water that’s bluer and clearer than that around the mainland’s shore. Once you are anchored near the uninhabited island, snorkel to shore for a chance at seeing nurse sharks, sea turtles, and angelfish. Wander the island near the old lighthouse and find a secluded piece of beach to relax. Bounty Adventures offers an island excursion manned by fun and friendly staff that includes wine, beer, and lunch. Ocean Encounters, a reputable and eco-conscious boat dive operation, arranges dive trips to Klein Curacao and pierside pickups from hotels such as Lion’s Dive Resort, Hyatt Regency Golf Resort, Spa and Marina, and the Kura Hulanda Lodge and Beach Club.•No. 3 - Curacao Top Activities
Swim in the Blue Cave. Located near one of Curacao’s best dive sites, Mushroom Forest, the Blue Cave is a small swimming hole tucked along rugged seaside cliffs where the reflection of the Caribbean Sea turns the entire inside a sapphire blue, providing enough light to view large lobsters and small fish below. Watch for jellyfish, which sometimes get trapped in the cave.•No. 4 - Curacao Top Activities
Dive Mushroom Forest. Mushroom Forest lies near a cliff in up to 65 feet of water. It's a rare kelp forest with thousands of marine plants bursting with shades of violet, green, blue and yellow swaying gracefully with the movement of the currents. There were not a ton of exotic fish or turtles present on a recent dive excursion to the site, but it is one of the most intriguing underwater parks you’ll ever see. Sign up for a two-tank boat dive to Mushroom Forest with Ocean Encounters and you’ll do your surface interval (break between dives) at the Blue Cave.•No. 5 - Curacao Top Activities
Sail or Golf at the Hyatt Regency. Curacao’s newest and largest hotel features a long and spacious marina. Near the Ocean Encounters office on the beach it is possible to rent hobie cats for use in the low-traffic waters surrounding Hyatt beaches, which allow you to enjoy being in the water without having to go very far. If sailing on mini catamaran boats is not for you, play a round on the Hyatt’s 18-hole golf course (one of two full-size courses on the island). It features a few holes with views of Tafelberg Mountain and the Caribbean Sea. Lessons are offered for beginners.•No. 6 - Curacao Top Activities
Hike Christoffel National Park. You won’t realize there are eight hiking trails in this park once you arrive. That’s because you’ll become immediately occupied watching the waves crash into cliffs near the park’s entrance. It is the largest national park of Curacao and is teeming with rare native flora and fauna, such as barn owls, white-tailed deer (nearly extinct), and wild orchids. The trails range from easy to challenging, such as a hike to the top of Mt. Christoffel, which is approximately 1,230 feet. The park also organizes mountain biking tours, safaris, and cave excursions.
