How to Grout a Vinyl Tile Floor

    • 1). Apply grout in a far corner of the room to begin, and work your way out to avoid walking back over freshly grouted areas.

    • 2). Scoop a small amount of grout onto the end of the grout float. Press the grout into the grout line. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle, and pull it towards yourself. Continue this pattern of applying grout until you have covered no more than a 2x2-foot area. Keep the grout off of the tile as much as possible.

    • 3). Spread the grout with a 2-inch putty knife if you struggle to use a float. A putty knife reduces the amount of grout that spreads out onto the tile.

    • 4). Fill the 5-gallon bucket with warm water, which you can use to smooth the grout lines and to wash excess grout off of the tile.

    • 5). Dip the sponge into the bucket, and wring it out. The sponge must only be wet and not dripping. A dripping sponge will wash all of the grout out of the grout lines.

    • 6). Hold the sponge flat on one grout line at a time, and pull it towards you. Turn the sponge over, and use the other side to complete washing the grout line. Only apply enough pressure to the sponge to smooth the line. Excessive pressure on the sponge pulls the grout out of the lines. Rinse the sponge, and use the edge of it to wash the excess grout off the tile.

    • 7). Repeat each application and washing step until you have grouted the entire room. Allow the grout to dry for a minimum of 24 hours from the time that you finish grouting.

    • 8). Wash grout haze off the tile with a damp sponge or towel.
