Mullein Home Remedy
- In Germany, mullein is a key herbal treatment to deal with ear infections. The flowers of the plant are steeped in olive oil and then strained and applied in the ear canal. It contains substances that treat and protect the lining of the ear canal that have been affected by infection as well as substances that block the hormonal processes that promote inflammation and pain. You can make this oil yourself, but it is available for purchase already prepared.
- When used as a compress, it relieves the inflammation that causes bloodshot eyes. A mullein compress is also useful for hemorrhoids, cuts and scrapes; it contains tannins, which are powerful substances that constrict tissue and lessen bleeding. Taken internally, it treats diarrhea by reducing inflammation in the intestines.
- This herb is best known for its applications in respiratory infections. There are two ways it relieves congestion. First, its mucilage, a plant protein that helps create protective barriers that provide soothing relief for many conditions, soothes injured areas of the mouth and throat. Secondly, it contains compounds that prompt the central nervous system to move phlegm from the body. It activates the cough reflex to encourage expectoration, tones the respiratory system's mucous membranes and reduces inflammation.
- It is most commonly used as oil which is made by placing the chopped leaves in a glycerin extract. Since this extract is not made with alcohol, it can be used by children who have a cough. It is also available in tea form, which can be drunk and used to make compresses. The seeds are toxic, so do not use them for medicinal purposes. Do not take use this herb if you are pregnant or nursing. Take the supplement as directed on the product label.
