What Is the Proper Way to Prune a Cherry Tree?
- Prune cherry trees in late winter before the spring growth season begins. Summer pruning can deter proper growth; therefore, once the cherry tree reaches the size you want it, you can start summer pruning.
- Trim the sweet cherry tree using a modified leader system technique. Prune branches away leaving three to five scaffold or perpendicular branches to the main leader or upright trunk of the tree. Head or cut back branches that grow to an excessive length to promote branching.
- Prune the tart cherry tree by removing branches that cross over one another. Trim out dead or broken branches. Trim away branches leaving a modified leader system or an open center with strong branches that have at least a 45-degree, wide angle crotch from the main tree.
