The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of a crash fatality by 37 percent. The Department of Transportation (DOT) sets minimum standards for helmets and tests them to verify they reach these standards. Louisiana requires the use of such DOT-approved helmets. Other states have different requirements, but riders in Louisiana should know the applicable laws. - In Louisiana, as in 20 other states, all motorcycle riders are required to wear helmets. In addition to helmets that are DOT approved, Louisiana also requires that motorcycle riders wear a visor.
- In Louisiana, all riders are required to wear helmets if they are riding a scooter, moped, or any other two-wheeled cycle. These are categorized as low-power cycles (LPCs).
- In Louisiana, as in 21 other states, bicycle riders are also required to wear helmets. Louisiana law states that any bicycle rider under the age of 11 must wear a protective bicycle helmet when riding. Riders 11 years or older are not required to wear a bicycle helmet.
