Step 1 - Prepare the Hair
Step 1 - Prepare the Hair
Sarah Palin's hairstyle has been the topic of many articles, blogs, and emails asking "just how do I get the Sarah Palin look?" Well, search no further, as this step-by-step article will give you a simple and secure Sarah Palin style in minutes, right at home! All you'll need is a curling iron (or flat iron), a comb, a hair tie, a hair clip, and some hairspray!
The first step in getting the Sarah Palin updo look, is to prepare your hair by creating a soft wave in the hair with the ends turned under.
You can do this with a large barrel curling iron, or with a flat iron (just bend the ends under as you pull the hair through the plates).
Step 2 - Back Comb the Hair
The next step is to create height, by back combing the hair through the top and crown of the head.
First, create a part, to the right or left of center. If you have bangs, you will want to make sure that part begins just past your bangs.
Next, take two to three-inch wide section of hair at the top of your head that's approximately one-half inch thick, and back comb (tease) the hair to create a cushion of hair at the scalp.
Continue by taking another half inch section just behind the first section and back comb the two sections into each other. Continue until you have back combed the entire crown area of your head. The amount of back combing you do will directly impact the amount of height you achieve in your hair style. At this point, its okay if the hair looks a mess, you will smooth it out in the next step!
Step 3 - Smooth the Hair
Once you've got your hair into a nice little mess on top, it's time to smooth it out.
Using a comb, lightly comb over the top of your hair until the top is as smooth as you'd like it to be. At the same time, you can begin gathering the sides back into a loose ponytail.
At this time, you may find that you didn't back comb the hair enough during the previous step. If that's the case, just start over and tease a little more before you smooth it out.
Step 4 - Make a Half Pony Tail
Now, this next step will help you control the height on the top of your head and keep the style in place.
Take the top half of your hair and pull it into a loose ponytail. After the ponytail is secure, you can use your comb to adjust the top and sides and get the look as smooth or messy as you want.
Step 5 - Clip it Up
Using a claw clip, like the one shown in the photo, secure the remainder of your hair to your half pony tail. Use your comb to smooth or loosen the hair, as desired.
Step 6 - Arrange the Hair
Next, you'll want to arrange your hair so that the clip doesn't show. Use your comb to tease, where necessary, and a little hairspray to secure your style.
The last step is to adjust the hair for symmetry and style your bangs (fringe). Obviously, the model in this photo doesn't have bangs, so we didn't style them. The Sarah Palin fringe look can be achieved by curling the bangs under, just slightly, and separating where necessary with a comb and a little hairspray.
Use a firm holding hairspray to secure your style.
