Australian Government Roof Insulation Rebate
Calling all Australian HOMEOWNERS - You don't have to wait for the official start of the Australian Federal Government Insulation Rebate program on July 1st 2009!
There is HUGE interest in this program and the waiting lists could be long and take you all the way through winter before your chosen installer gets to you!
Due to this heavy demand, there is a way however to get started before the program officially kicks off. T he Rudd government has opened up access to its $3.9bn energy efficient homes program which means that HOMEOWNERS can now install free ceiling insulation immediately! Go getters willing to do just a tad of groundwork themselves by organising their insulation installation and then paying up front can now do so and claim back the costs.
Although the program officially starts 1st July 2009, eligible owner-occupiers can now seek reimbursements for their costs up to $1600, on approved installations with their chosen type of insulation and installer between 3rd February and 30th June 2009. From July 1 2009 however, a hot line will be set up and you will then "get in the queue!"
A frequently asked question from homeowners is "How does it work and will insulation actually make a difference?
The simple answer to the question is that heat always moves in the direction of cooler areas. The key lies in controlling this heat transfer. For example, when it is hot, insulation reduces the amount of heat that enters your home and alternatively when it is cold, insulation reduces the amount of heat (either natural or artificial heating such as wood fires or heaters) that can escape from your home. There are three ways in which heat is transferred: conduction, convection and radiation. Depending on which type of insulation is used, for example batts and blankets, boards and loose fill options, insulation materials work by affecting some or even all 3 of these methods of heat transfer.
The difference (while not an air conditioner in summer and a heater in winter!) can be quite noticeable especially for those living in extreme climates. You will also notice significant energy savings by not having to run your air conditioner in summer at such low temperatures and you will not require as much wood in wood fire heaters as if you had no insulation.
For those in colder climates, you will know all too well the feeling of going to bed the night before with your lounge room nice and toasty only to find that by morning, it is an arctic wilderness! Good quality insulation can retain more of this heat overnight and in some cases, get you through til the morning stoke!
Insulating the roof or ceiling of your home is paramount as the greatest amount of heat transfer occurs in this area. The Australian Government Rebate makes this easier and cheaper to do right now!
The process is quite simple - you organize an approved installation within the guidelines of the program (as listed on the Federal Government website), pay for the job and then submit a reimbursement application form. Quite easy really and you can then be enjoying the many comfort and energy saving benefits of roof insulation before the program even officially commences!
