How to Propagate Evergreens

16
    • 1). Mix a pound of sand with a half-pound each of peat moss fertilizer and potting soil. Pour the mix into either a very large terra cotta pot or a planting tray. Smooth the surface of the soil.

    • 2). Snip several 4-inch cuttings from the tips of the evergreen's branches. Take the cuttings from hard, woody branches rather than new growth, making sure that the cutting has a little foliage on it.

    • 3). Score the bottom half-inch of each cutting vertically and dip the end in rooting hormone. Rooting hormone helps provide nutrients and encourages root growth; it comes in liquid and powder form. Moisten the end of the cutting before using powder to help it stick.

    • 4). Stick the scored end of each cutting into the prepared soil, spacing them 3 inches apart. Water until the soil is moist but not soaked. Keep the cuttings in a cool, sunny area.

    • 5). Mist the cuttings every other day, watering whenever the soil is almost dry. Tend to the cuttings this way for about 12 months until they become saplings ready for transplant.
