Homemade Turkey Calls

8

    Pill Bottles

    • Cut the top off a typical prescription pill bottle. Then, cut or trim about half the top of the container, creating a half-moon shape. Next, you can either remove the entire bottom of the bottle, using a drill bit and slowly sanding away the entire surface, or merely drill a half-inch hole in the bottom of it. Try experimenting with both to see which sound you like best. Next, take a latex sanitary glove (you can purchase a small bag of these from your local drugstore) and cut a piece approximately one inch by one inch. Place the latex (which is now your reed) across the top of the bottle and then place the top back on.

    Bone Call

    • Make your own turkey call out of wing bones of wild hens. The bones of domestic birds are not strong enough. Save the long bones or the turkey wing bones from your next Thanksgiving bird. Different bones will offer a different tone or pitch, as do those between male and female birds. Experiment until you find one you like. Using the wing bones, you'll use the radius for the mouthpiece, and the ulna for the midsection.

Separate bones and clean. Cut bones with sharp knife or hacksaw where bone ends at the knobs. Insert a piece of stiff wire or rifle bore brush through center of bone to remove marrow. Boil the bones in water. You can add dish detergent to help soften the bones. You can add bleach to the mix if you want a white bone appearance.

Attach the end of the smaller radius bone into the end of the larger ulna bone and if you want to, you may also insert the other end of the ulna into the humerus bone in the same manner, though some hunters do without the humerus. Use epoxy glue to cement the bones together, careful not to block the opening or passageway created by removal of the marrow.

    Other Turkey Calls

    • Make turkey calls at home with objects lying around the house, such as straws of different sizes and even pens with their insides removed. The key is to be able to fit one smaller tube inside a larger tube-like structure to produce different sounds. Tones will also depend on whether materials are wet or dry, as well as how long they are. Create the call by sucking air into, not blowing out, and pausing once in a while. The way you hold the turkey call will also create different sounds. For best results, tuck the larger end of the turkey call near the top of the palm, holding between the thumb and index finger. Place your other hand at the bottom of the pinkie holding the call. Curl the lower thumb around, as if you're blowing on cupped hands when you're cold. Practice different hand placement and position to create different sounds.
