How to Launch a Walkalong Glider
- 1). Take your walkalong glider and paddle board to an enclosure that has a large open floor space, such as a warehouse or gymnasium. You need an unobstructed flight path, with a lot of room for fast walking maneuvers. Clear the area of any tables or chairs. There should be no major drafts or fans in the area.
- 2). Hold the glider in one hand, preferably your throwing hand, and the paddle board in the other hand. If left-handed, hold the glider with your left hand and the paddle board's right, top end with your right hand. Reverse the hand placement if you are right-handed. Raise your left hand over your head to full extension, keeping the glider level, with the nose facing away from you.
- 3). Pitch the glider forward in a slightly nose down attitude so it begins a dropping glide. A light toss works best. If you throw it with force, you will end up running after it. Immediately bring the tossing hand down to grip the other end of the paddle board, and raise the paddle board up behind and under the glider.
- 4). Tilt the top of the paddle board slightly toward you, and walk swiftly behind the glider. The paddle board will provide a cushion of up-lifting air to keep the glider aloft. Keep the paddle board under the glider, pushing the board up to raise the glider in altitude, or pull it slightly back to decrease the altitude. Dip the paddle board to the left or right to make a turn, but only do so to make corrections.
- 5). Concentrate on keeping the glider in straight and level flight for as long as you can. Experiment by holding the paddle board at different angles and distances from the glider. The paddle board must be directly under the glider at all times, and you must walk fast enough to keep up with the glider's natural speed limit.
