How to Catch a Big Trout With Crank Bait

27
    • 1). Survey the river or stream before fishing. Even small crank baits such as those used for river or stream trout will still dive down to depths of 2 or 3 feet. Look for areas of deeper water or pooling where a crank can be used.

    • 2). Cast the lure into the current of the river just above a deeper run or pool. Allow the crank to naturally swim down river with the current into the slower water.

    • 3). Turn the handle of the reel slowly and begin working the crank down and across the deeper water. Allow the crank to work with the current by using a slow and steady retrieve.

    • 4). Pull the tip of the rod up or to the side sharply. This will add a jerking or darting motion to the crank as it works through the water. Apply other actions to the crank including working the lure down, stopping the retrieve and allowing it to rise in the water.

    • 5). Apply steady pressure to the line while fishing and reel in slack as the lure comes closer to you. When a trout strikes, do not apply a hard set as this might pull the lure from the mouth of the fish. Many times a trout will set the hook itself during the strike.
