Organizing Your Office

    • 1). Think about your daily and weekly activities. What office supplies do you use most of the time? These items should be placed right on top of your desk or within quick reach in a top drawer. Items such as pens, a small note pad, a stapler, Whiteout, and paperclips should be included. If you need to purchase a top-of-the-desk office supply holder, make sure it is as small as you can get.

    • 2). Invest in a 2, 3, or 4 drawer filing cabinet. Depending on the size of your office, and the amount of paperwork you have, you can usually get by with a 2 drawer filing cabinet. Place this in the corner of your office near your desk. These make terrific printer stands.

    • 3). Create the following file folders: Insurance, Pay stubs, Home, Car, Bank, College, Taxes, and Warranties. Most people have other categories specific to their needs. Go ahead and make additional folders that fit your lifestyle. Then, alphabetically place the folders in the file cabinet.

    • 4). Set up a basket or tray on your desk for mail. Each day when you come home, place the mail into the tray until you can go through the entire stack.

    • 5). Hang a large calendar in your direct eyesight. On the wall behind and slightly above your computer screen is a good place. The wall adjacent to your desk is another ideal location. This lets you quickly see, at a moment's glance, what is happening during a given day, week, or month.
