Typesetter

20

Definition:

Originally, typesetting was a specialized skill. A typesetter took written material and set it in type (wooden, metal, and later, machine-generated) according to the specifications of the designer or printer. It is the job of the typesetter to make sure all the correct typefaces and specific fonts are used throughout the document with all the text properly arranged.

Today, the role of the typesetter has been largely replaced by the graphic designer or desktop publisher who does the typesetting digitally in conjunction with other page layout tasks.

Also Known As: textsetter

Alternate Spellings: type setting

Examples: "Typography in graphic design involves the selection of appropriate typefaces and their arrangement on the page."
