How to Turn Plastic Bag Into a Grow Bag

21
    • 1). Determine what you want to grow. A few suggestions are potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers and squash. Pick an area that has full sun, such as a sunny porch, sidewalk or yard. Alternatively, start the plastic grow bags indoors in late winter to get a jump on the growing season. When it gets warm enough outside, the plants can be transplanted into the garden.

    • 2). Set the empty bags where you'll want them to be. Fill each bag with potting soil to approximately 1 to 2 inches beneath the top of the bag. Grab the bag by the handles, lift the bag slightly from the ground, shake it a little, and then set it back down to get a flat surface on the bottom so it will not tip over.

    • 3). Plant the seeds, seedling plants or seed potatoes evenly spaced along the top of the soil in the bag. For example, make a circle indention in the top of the soil and drop seeds into the indention. Put two seed potatoes in one bag approximately 4 inches from the top of the soil with the eye of the potato pointing up. Place one tomato plant in each bag.

    • 4). Poke three or four holes near the bottom of the bag for water drainage. Water the soil but do not let the soil stand in water. Fertilize every four weeks with an organic fertilizer such as compost or an organic commercial fertilizer.

    • 5). Continue growing outdoors in the bags until the harvest is complete, or transplant the plants into a traditional garden bed.
