Could hospitals become more inviting friendly places? Some people believe so now that new health care reform laws are kicking in starting next week which make Medicare payments to hospitals based, in part, on the result of consumer satisfaction surveys. In short, the happier patients are when they are released from the hospital, the more money hospitals will make. Some hospitals are stopping night time cleaning crews (which can be noisy and disturb patients) while others are fluffing up the environment by putting up new art work and installing soothing fountains. Others are trying to make more private rooms available so patients don't feel crowded. Some hospitals are taking service to the next level, offering free lattes and valet parking. Our local hospital, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) does offer valet parking for patients coming into its cancer clinic. These surveys will have more importance over time. This year, hospitals are at risk of losing 1% of their payouts if they don't do well on their surveys, and this will double by fiscal 2017. I think this is a great step forward. Historically, there has been very little post-release follow up other than to find out if the patient was following discharge instructions. Patients and their insurance companies are paying a huge amount of money for hospital visits, and the experience should be as pleasant as the circumstances allow for.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
