Coaching Skills - 4 Most Important Skills in Coaching

18
You maybe very knowledgeable and experienced on one specific field but if you don't have the following skills, there is no way that you are going to make it in the field of coaching: 1.
Active listening skills.
The problem with other coaches is that they do all the talking.
They make assumptions about the problems or goals of their clients and they give them solutions and advice based on these assumptions.
In the end, they leave their clients feeling unsatisfied or confused.
If you don't want to become one of them, I'd say, give your clients a chance to speak up.
Ask about the things that they are going through or the main reasons why they have hired you.
Practice active listening and take in as much information as you can.
The more you know about these people and their problems, the higher your chances of giving them their exact learning needs.
2.
Teaching skills.
Whether you are doing a traditional classroom type of coaching or you are using email or phone, it's still a must that you have a great teaching skill.
You need to have the ability to teach people things that they need to learn in the simplest way possible.
You can develop or acquire techniques from people who are expert in coaching.
Watch them when they are in action and make a mental note of their techniques.
Some are using repetition, hands-on practice, simulation, etc.
to help their students retain as much information as possible.
3.
Motivation skills.
As a coach, you must be able to inspire or motivate your clients so they'll work harder to reach their pre-set goals.
What I do is I always remind these people of their skills and I always communicate my faith in them.
I also give them a pat on the back as much as I can.
People are most likely to trust themselves if they know someone believes in them.
4.
Communication skills.
This is one of the pre-requisites to become a coach.
If you are finding it difficult to express your thoughts and opinions, I am pretty sure that you'll lose the business of your clients in a heart beat.
You must be able to present yourself as a good communicator.
If you feel like needing it, you can attend relevant seminars that can help you improve your communication skills.
Constant practice will also greatly help.
