Fitness Tips for Moms to Be

34

    Get Moving

    • Staying fit while pregnant does not have to be boring or tedious. In fact, it should be fun! If you are a healthy pregnant woman, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends 30 minutes of exercise a day to benefit both you and your baby.

Walking is one of the easiest and most recommended ways for moms-to-be to stay fit. Easy to do inside or out, walking requires nothing more than a good pair of sneakers. If you get overheated easily or suffer from swollen legs or ankles, swimming will help you stay cool while working each muscle of your body without adding any undue stress on your joints. Low-impact aerobics, stationary cycling and yoga will all get your heart rate up but keep both you and baby safe.

If you had a regular workout routine before you became pregnant you can feel safe continuing the same exercises, but with a few modifications.

    Play It Safe

    • If you did not work out before your pregnancy, begin your new workout schedule slowly and at a comfortable pace. Start with 15 minutes of your favorite activity three times a week until you have gradually worked your way up to 30 minutes daily. Keep your heart rate below 140 beats per minute and remember this simple rule: If you can't hold a conversation while you are working out, you are pushing too hard. Know your limits and listen to your body while you are working out; if something starts to hurt, stop immediately.

Avoid activities where you might fall or that have direct contact with your abdomen. Steer clear of bicycling, horseback riding, basketball and soccer until after you give birth. If you are unsure about any activity, check with your doctor first.

    Stick With It

    • The hardest part about staying fit during pregnancy is staying motivated. Always stick to a schedule and recruit a friend who is willing to work out with you. And of course, remember to keep your workouts fun: Listen to music and do exercises that you enjoy. Be sure to mix things up. If your routine starts to get a little boring try a new class, walk a new route or buy a new DVD to watch at home. Just keep moving, Mom!
