Closet Organization 101
- 1). Remove everything from your closet. This will allow you to see not only what you need to organize, but also, what kind of space you have to work with. There may be some corners or space for additional shelving that you were unable to notice because of the things in the closet. Once the closet is empty, vacuum or sweep it out and dust. Do not buy any storage items until you have evaluated what you will be keeping.
- 2). Separate the items from the closet into four basic piles of keep, trash, repair, and donate. If you haven't worn an item in more than three months, try it on and evaluate whether it is still keep-able. Clothing that is too tight or loose should be donated. Anything requiring minor repairs may be kept, but if you do not make the repairs within two weeks, the item should be thrown out. Bag and remove the trash, repair and donate piles.
- 3). Sort the "keep" pile into groups of pants, sweaters, tops, dresses (or long coats), and athletic wear. Note how much of each type of clothing you have. This will help you determine how best to use your closet. If you have room, seasonal wear items can be stored elsewhere in your house, such as under the bed or in an attic or basement.
- 4). Count how many pairs shoes you need to store and group them by color and use. Use a shoe hanger on the back of the closet door or purchase clear plastic containers in which to store shoes. This will allow you to quickly determine your options when dressing. If you do not have clear containers, take a picture of the shoes and tape the picture to the front of the box.
- 5). Organize miscellaneous items by using every inch of available space. Be creative. Inexpensive plastic hooks make good belt hangers, for example, and can also be used for scarves, hats, and camisoles or tank tops. Look up and down as there may be wasted space toward the top of your closet. There may be room to add a shelf closer to the ceiling on which rarely used items can be stored. Purchase bins to place on the closet floor.
