How Can I Locate Assets of Non-Custodial Parents?

35
    • 1). Apply to the Child Support Enforcement agency in your state for assistance. CSE agencies were created by federal law to ensure that custodial parents receive child support payments. This office can locate non-custodial parents as well as their assets.

    • 2). Allow the government to do its job. CSE agencies have several tools at their disposal to track down those who are delinquent in their child support payments.
Administrative subpoenas are one tool of CSE agencies. These types of subpoenas eliminate the need for court orders. Another tool is the Financial Institution Data Match program, which is a list maintained by a financial institution of all its account holders. This list can be matched against the CSE agency's list of delinquent support obligors. On the federal level, the IRS works with CSE agencies to provide information on the location, assets, and other financial information of those who owe child support.

    • 3). Hire a private investigator. A private investigator can track down a parent who has not paid child support. Your private investigator will not have all of the same access to the same resources as a CSE agency, but he can use more accessible records and resources to track down the non-custodial parent's assets. This method is more expensive than availing yourself of a state-run CSE agency, and the private investigator has no way of seizing the non-custodial parent's assets.
