How to Choose the Correct Hunting Stand
- 1). Choose a large hunting stand, at least 30 inches by 28 inches. A larger stand provides a greater sense of security and more room to comfortably sit.
- 2). Buy a hunting stand that attaches to the tree on both the bottom and top of the stand. Choose a stand that has locking pins and ratchet-tightened straps or chains for additional safety.
- 3). Select a hunting stand with the proper weight capacity, based on your body weight. Choosing a stand with a weight-load capacity that's too low could result in a fatal accident. Read the manufacturer's recommendations for the weight load or ask a store employee. Buy only load-tested, Treestand Manufacturer's Association-certified hunting stands. A load-tested stand can support at least twice the rated weight capacity.
- 4). Try out a stand before making a purchase. Test the seat and backrest for comfort. If there is a stand available at the store, climb it and make note of the stability and ease of use.
- 5). Determine your hunting habits and purchase either a fixed hunting stand, portable stand or a ladder stand. The portable stand allows easy adjustment to maneuver to the preferred height. Buy a portable stand if you intend to continually move the stand to different locations. Choose a fixed stand for a one-time installation at a location where you frequently hunt. Opt for a ladder stand to reach a greater height and to accommodate two people.
