The first thing that you can do is fly at times that people will normally not fly.
Sometimes you can do this by flying standby, and other times you can purchase the tickets in advance.
If you fly standby then you can often times get some great deals by negotiating with the airlines.

Another thing that you can do to get really cheap plane tickets is to call the automatic updates hotline for a particular airline and see what kind of deals they have going on.
Doing this can really get you some great deals if you do it right after the hotlines are updated.
Often times this is around midnight, so check then to get great deals.

By far the best method that I have found for getting really cheap plane tickets is to know someone on the inside.
By this I mean either a current airline employee or an ex airline employee.
These people tend to have information not usually available to the public, which gives you access to how to really get the best deals on airline travel.
