Pregnancy Medicaid Qualifications

25

    Income

    • Income requirements differ, depending on the state. All sources of income, both earned and unearned, are included. The total household income is compared to the federal poverty level (FPL), based on the number of family members. In Montana, pregnant women cannot exceed 150 percent of the FPL. In Georgia, the limit is 200 percent for pregnant women. California's Medi-Cal features different programs based on eligibility categories, including presumptive eligibility, income disregard program and medically needy with a share cost.

    Resources

    • Not all states have asset restrictions for pregnancy Medicaid. For example, Florida, Georgia, Montana, California and Illinois do not have an asset limit. Utah and West Virginia only allow $2,000 in countable assets for individuals and $3,000 for couples. Your home, vehicle and personal property, such as household items, jewelry and furniture, are exempt.

    Documents

    • Applicants are required to provide proof of pregnancy. You can obtain proof at your local health department or doctor's office. Proof of citizenship and identity is also required. Legal immigrants must supply immigration documents. U.S. residents will need to submit a birth certificate, valid Social Security number and government-issued identification. Proof of income must also be supplied.

    Other Medicaid Programs

    • Pregnant women who exceed the income requirements or do not qualify because of issues such as immigration status may fall into the medically needy category of eligibility. Medically needy recipients incur medical expenses and are allowed to deduct these costs from their income to meet the income guidelines. In some states, pregnant women are required to pay a portion of their medical expenses through medically needy with a share of the cost. Non-citizens can also receive coverage for emergencies. Emergency Medical Assistance is offered to women who meet all criteria except for their citizenship status. The program covers serious medical emergencies, including emergency labor and delivery.
