SubterraneanTermite Treatment
- Subterranean termites build their colonies in the ground, with tunnels and chambers for living and raising young. These termites require the presence of moisture, and feed on damp wood.
- The most efficient way to treat for any termites is to attack the colony. Look for subterranean termite colonies in the soil around your property, and especially in damp places. There may be raised tunnels that lead from the colony to the house or barn, for termites commuting from work to home. Spray the colony with pesticide to kill the termites inside.
- Another efficient treatment for subterranean termites is the use of termite baits. Bury the baits around your home, bait them with pieces of wood, and then rig them with slow-acting pesticide. Termites will enter the baits to get to the wood, and then track the pesticide back to their colony, where it will do its work.
- Liquid pesticide treatment works on subterranean termites, which are soil-bound and must always travel through the dirt of the yard, but has several drawbacks. Although it kills termites on contact, it does little to combat the presence of the colony. As long as the colony exists, it will continue to replenish the termite population.
- After you have found and destroyed the colony through termite baits or searching, build barriers around your property to keep other subterranean termites from coming back. Spray the boundaries of your property with a liquid treatment, and set up termite baits at regular intervals. This will help prevent new termites from moving in.
