Display Problems on an HP Laptop DV2000

28

    Component Defect

    • HP Pavilion DV2000 series laptops use Nvidia brand graphics chips to process images for display on the monitor. Due to an error in manufacturing, these chips are vulnerable to higher rates of failure than normal, causing the laptop to become overheated and suffer display and operating problems. Numerous other HP laptops are also affected by this defect, including the DV6000 and DV9000 series, as well as HP's Compaq Presario V3000 and V6000 series models.

    Cause

    • The Nvidia graphic chipsets in the DV2000 offer “weakened die and packaging material,” according to NVIDIA, meaning that the component's structural integrity is compromised, allowing it to overheat. This overheating can lead to component failure, which will manifest itself in numerous ways. Although the affected component is a graphic chip, its overheating and subsequent failure affects other areas of your HP to prevent proper operation and render it almost useless.

    Symptoms

    • Overheating inside your laptop, regardless of the cause, is hazardous to your HP's delicate electronics and can affect every aspect of your laptop. Obvious symptoms of a faulty graphics chip are display problems, such as a blank screen and odd images and characters on the display. Additional symptoms include failure to boot and sudden shutdowns due to overheating.

    Solution

    • In an attempt to correct this component defect, HP offered to repair the affected laptops and released a BIOS update that helped address the overheating issue. The core problem doesn't lend itself to an easy do-it-yourself fix, but a tech-savvy owner may be able to replace components personally if so desired. The price of replacement laptop components may exceed the worth of an older laptop, however, and the owner should weigh the cost of repair with the cost of replacement.
