1991 Ford Mustang 2.3-Liter Performance

13

    Engine Output and Gas Mileage

    • With four cylinders, the 2.3-liter engine of the 1991 Ford Mustang LX produced 105 horsepower. Paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, the '91 LX got 22 miles per gallon for city driving and 30 mpg for highway driving.

    LX vs. LX 5.0L

    • Although there was an alternate version of the 1991 Ford Mustang LX dubbed the "LX 5.0L," it did not share the same 2.3-liter engine. Indeed, Ford affixed the "5.0L" designation in reference to the 5-liter capacity of its engine. Also, it was a V-6, and it had 225 horses---more than twice the amount of horsepower. The LX, however, shared the same turning diameter with the LX 5.0L at 37 feet.

    LX vs. GT

    • Because of the Ford Mustang's reputation as a performance vehicle, most car writers wrote off the 2.3-liter engine-equipped vehicles, preferring instead to focus on the ones equipped with a 5-liter engine. The top-level GT garnered most of the attention. Sporting the same engine as the LX 5.0L, it could go from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and cover the quarter-mile in 15.6 seconds.

    Advantages

    • The 2.3-liter engine-equipped 1991 Mustangs had better gas mileage. The 5.0-liter engine-equipped trims got a fuel economy of 17/24 mpg in comparison with the LX's 22/30 mpg. Also, the LX was cheaper, with an original manufacturer's suggested retail price range of $10,215 to $16,280. The LX 5.0L and GT, on the other hand, had an MSRP range of $13,328 to $19,922.

    Reception

    • More than half the 99,000 Mustangs that Ford produced for the 1991 model year were LXs. The production numbers symbolized the relative lack of confidence in Mustang sales, and the automaker was considering halting production indefinitely until it succeeded in revamping the vehicle by the end of the decade.
