How to Stop Collection Calls to My Cell Phone

36
    • 1). Answer the phone when the collection agency calls. Ask to speak with a supervisor. If the collection agency is trying to reach a debtor who used your cell phone number before your provider assigned it to you, calmly explain this fact to the supervisor. Sometimes taking this action will stop the calls.

    • 2). Write a letter to the collection agency demanding that it immediately stop contacting you if speaking with a supervisor doesn't remedy the problem. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act states that, upon receiving a written request to cease all contact, a collection agency can only contact you once more and inform you that it has either received your letter and the calls will cease or intends to take specific action against you. This communication, however, must arrive by mail rather than by telephone.

    • 3). Send your letter to the collection agency via registered or certified mail and ask the post office for a return receipt. A return receipt is a form of delivery confirmation that sends you a copy of the letter's delivery date and the recipient's signature, proving that the company received your letter.
