What Do Anglesey and Demi Moore Have in Common?

48
Anglesey island off the North Wales coast is well known for its outstanding natural beauty, so much so that it was chosen as a location for shooting a Demi Moore film.
The island offers the visitor the opportunity to ramble along a special 125-mile coastal path with official status, and magnificent sea and mountain views from most corners of an island often referred to as the "jewel in the crown" of Wales.
It was these stunning coastal and mountain scenes that persuaded Charlie Somers to choose Anglesey for some key shots in Demi Moore's Half Light, a romantic, paranormal thriller, written and directed by Craig Rosenberg.
As well as using some beautiful island locations for the film, Somers also went over to the mainland and used nearby Porthmadog on the Lleyn peninsula.
He was also responsible for choosing locations in the nearby Snowdon mountains across the water for some scenes in Lara Croft Tomb Raider 2.
Half Light tells the story of Rachel Carson, a writer of thrillers, played by Moore, who escapes to a small cottage on the remote Scottish coast after the tragic death of her young son.
The similarity of the island and the of West of Scotland coastline was again instrumental in the island's seascapes being chosen for this work.
Rachel Carson tries to get her life back at this remote coastal location and during her stay meets and falls in love with the local lighthouse keeper.
Of course the lighthouse used is on Anglesey, near Llanddwyn beach on the south eastern corner of the island.
From here you have wonderful view of the Snowdonia mountain range on the mainland, often snow capped in the winter and spring seasons, and further south the Lleyn peninsula stretching down towards Bardsey Island.
The small lighthouse on the rocky outcrop at Llanddwyn is no longer used but it is an unmistakeable landmark for visitors, approaching from Newborough Forest or for those sailing on passage from the tidal waters off Caernarfon bar towards Holyhead in the west.
This little rocky headland at Llanddwyn is also famous as it is the site dedicated to Saint Dwynwen, the patron saint of lovers in Wales, the equivalent of Saint Valentine.
On the opposite side of Anglesey there is what is widely regarded as the oldest Christian church in Wales, after the 4th century saint Patrick, located near a cliff edge on the north west coast of the island near the village of Cemaes.
Llanbadrig church was used for some of cemetery shots in Demi Moore's Half Light film, and again this is a remote location, exposed to strong winds off the Irish Sea.
The church also has an interesting connection with Islamic art, as a local 19th century benefactor and member of the House of Lords, who converted to Islam, chose the stained glass design using a mixture of blues, reds and whites.
So if you ever get the opportunity to visit Anglesey island you could visit an old lighthouse on a beautiful sandy beach and an old church on an exposed cliff top, both of which played a role in a Demi Moore film.
