How to Leave a Team

12
    • 1). Determine that you really want to leave the team. Before you can go to the coaching staff, you really want to make sure you are steadfast in your decision. Coaching staffs and the other players on the team may not accept you back if you suddenly change your mind and want to return. If you are not sure you want to quit, maybe ask the coach for some one-on-one time to address some specific issues you are having. If, however, you are steadfast in your decision, it is time to let the coach know.

    • 2). Contact the coach as soon as you have made your decision. If you have his phone number call him and ask him if he has a moment to talk. If you do not have his number, send him an e-mail with your number, or ask for a few minutes alone at the start of practice.

    • 3). Inform the coach of your decision. Be honest with the coach about why you wish to leave the team. Everyone in life has pressures, and if you truly need to leave the team to alleviate those pressures, then the coach should respect that decision. One thing you should not do is lie. For example, if you play two sports in the same season, don't tell your coach you are leaving both teams if you are not. Instead, be honest and say that you need to make a choice and for you that choice is to play the other sport.

    • 4). Offer to address the team. Depending on the coach and the situation, he may or may not want you to say a few words. If he does, then he will set aside some time for you to do so when appropriate at practice. If not, then it is up to you if you want to reach out to members of your team individually and explain the situation. Truthfully, you should at least address the players you are close to on a personal basis.

    • 5). Address the team if the coach allows it. Tell them you will be leaving. If the details surrounding your decision are personal, you do not need to share that information. Instead, simply say there are some personal things you need to take care of and that you are wishing the team well, and will be rooting for them the rest of the season.

    • 6). Return any uniforms or equipment that belongs to the team or league. You can ask the coach if you can drop these materials by his home or office if you do not wish to see members of your team.
