    Garnish with Chocolate

    • Chocolate is a versatile food that can be used in different forms to garnish a cake and other desserts. Fill a decorating bag with melted chocolate. Use a small round tip to pipe the melted chocolate onto wax paper. Create any design you want on wax paper. You may want to put a piece of paper under the wax paper with a design on it that you can trace. Allow the design to cool completely and remove the designs with a sharp knife. Use the designs to garnish chocolate cakes. You may also choose to garnish a cake with chocolate shavings or by creating a design with chocolate syrup on a plate that a piece of chocolate cake is served on.

    Garnish with Citrus Fruit

    • Use citrus fruit to garnish cakes. Lemons, limes and oranges are great for garnishing cakes, especially lighter cakes like sponge cakes, or those with a fruit filling or flavoring. Cut lemon slices and apply the slices to a decorated cake for a fresh looking garnish. Or cut the rind into small strips and tie them in knots. Use these knots to garnish individual plates of cake or in the center of a cake.

    Holiday and Special Occasion Garnishing

    • If you are creating a cake for a holiday or party, let the theme of the event dictate the garnish you choose. Use candy canes to garnish a Christmas or winter cake. A birthday cake garnish may follow the party theme or could simply include balloons made of icing. You could even a small toy to garnish a cake. Consider using candy, small toys or other small and lightweight objects as garnish.

    • There are a lot of ways to garnish cakes. Confectioners sugar and coconut flakes are a pretty and delicate garnish to give a cake a finished look. Chopped nuts and edible flowers also make nice garnish. You can also simply decorate a cake with colored icings and create interesting textures and patterns to create a one-of-a-kind look.
