Definition:

(adjective) Describes trees or shrubs that bear cones and have needle-like or scale-like evergreen leaves. Examples of coniferous trees include pine, cedar, fir, spruce and hemlock varieties, many of which are most prominent in northern areas including boreal forests and cool mountain regions.

Coniferous trees are critical for northern birds because the seed crops are essential food sources.


Because these are evergreen trees, they also provide necessary winter shelter and are excellent additions to bird-friendly landscaping. Bird species that rely on conifers often have specialized adaptations to feed on the seeds, such as extra thick bills or hooked bills that can pry into cones. The pine grosbeak and red crossbill are examples of birds adapted to feeding on coniferous trees.
