About US Navy Ships
- Aircraft carriers are the largest ships in the United States Navy fleet. They are considered the powerhouse of the fleet and are often likened to a floating city, coming complete with an airstrip for planes to take off and land.
- Submarines have been a part of the U.S. Navy since 1900 with the purpose of carrying out a varied selection of missions, including supporting Special Operations Forces. Attack subs, ballistic subs and guided missile subs are the classifications used by the Navy.
- Amphibious assault ships carry personnel and heavy equipment to various locations around the world, including remote locations without areas to load or unload the ships.
- The United States Navy calls destroyers the Greyhounds of the Sea because these are fast ships that were originally designed as torpedo boat destroyers.
- The U.S. Navy still uses frigates and cruisers as well. Battleships are no longer a part of the U.S. Navy fleet.
