- 1). Heat the steel in red or white fires in order to heat up the section.
- 2). Pick up the metal from the furnace, and place the hot end of the bar down on the anvil.
- 3). Strike the heated bar with heavy, well-timed blows.
- 4). Strike the cold end every four blows.
- 5). Straighten the bar with the hammer and tongs, once it starts to bend.
- 6). Use a pair of tongs to dip the bar in cold water.
- 7). Reheat the metal bar thoroughly to continue the upsetting. Repeat steps two and three.
- 8). Repeat steps six and seven indefinitely until you are able to shape the steel into your desired form.
- 9). Dip the metal in cold water and let it cool.
