How to Ship a Laptop to Canada
- 1). Research the shipping company. Shipping companies' rules vary from carrier to carrier including the type of shipments and the countries that are ellegible for shipment. Be sure that Canada is one of the carrier's shipping countries. It is important to find out their requirements for shipping certain items like your laptop before packing the laptop. Also be sure to check for the shipping companies policies regarding shipping subcontractors. If in the event of a lost, stolen, or damaged item, it will be harder to file and claim financial compensation if a shipping subcontractor is responsible. Therefore, be sure that your company will have possession of your laptop at all times so that they can be held accountable for any property damage or loss.
- 2). Wrap your laptop. Remove all laptop accessories including the AC adaptor, any CDs that may be inside the laptop, and the battery. Using bubble wrap, wrap your laptop using several layers of bubble wrap, wrapping each layer tightly. Using multiple layers of bubble wrap will prevent damage in case the box is jolted or dropped. Wrap the accessories separately.
- 3). Pack your shipping box. Using the shipping box from your shipping carrier, use packing materials like styrafoam peanuts and newspaper to create a layer of material for your laptop to sit on before placing it in the box.
- 4). Pack your laptop. Place the laptop in the box, paying special attention to the layer of material underneath it. Make sure that the level of material is smooth and level. Add a layer of packing material and then add the accessories. Place additional packing material on top and in any extra spaces around the laptop and accessories.
- 5). Close and tape the box. Since there is a lot of packing materials inside the box with the laptop, be sure that the box closes completely. Once the box is closed, using heavy duty tape, tape the box across the top seam working your way around to the bottom. Tape any additional seams or areas where the box could break or come apart.
- 6). Complete any necessary paperwork. Shipping companies require special forms to be filled out including customs forms for shipments to other countries. Complete all necessary information like the address and phone number of the receiver, the valued amount for insurance, and the time frame in which the items needs to be delivered.
- 7). Drop off your package. With your paperwork completed, drop off your package at your carrier's store. This option is better than dropping the item off at a drop box or scheduling a pickup. This way, you can give special instructions since the package is fragile and needs to be handled with care.
