Reward the puppy with a treat after he comes running when calling his name. Your pup will learn that this behavior is positive and enjoy being rewarded. Later you can eliminate the treats and give positive feedback by rubbing his head.

Put the collar and leash down in front of the puppy to sniff. Each day practice putting the collar and leash on then walking the pup around inside. Moving in his direction at first will elevate resistance. Slowly urge the puppy to try your direction and afterwards reward with a treat. Once your pet becomes comfortable walking inside, take him outside for a short walk.

Stop walking inside and the dog will follow your lead. Lean down and slowly push the puppies hind area down into a sit position while saying "Sit" at the same time. Repeat several times until the puppy sits automatically with voice command only. Remember to reward with a treat.

Ignore the puppy when he jumps up for attention. It is essential not to reward this inappropriate behavior with treats or affection. This looks adorable when small but could result in knocking someone down as the puppy grows larger. Consistently ignoring bad behavior or crossing your arms will show the puppy this is unacceptable and not tolerated.

Place your puppy in a confined area while you are away. Make sure this space includes sleeping, playing, drinking, and elimination areas. The waste area needs several newspapers stacked together or dog potty pads. Remember to clean this area on a regular basis.
