The Holiday Resort of Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria
Puerto Rico is a tourist resort located on the south coast of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, within the Canarian archipelago. It has a population of 2,580 inhabitants largely employed supporting the local tourist industry.
The whole of the Southeast of Gran Canaria enjoys very favorable weather conditions due to a large central mountain range providing shelter from humid southerly trade winds. The area is a popular winter destination with average temperatures in January and February of around 20°C (68°F). Summer temperatures average 28°C (82°F). Neighbouring resorts include Puerto Mogan, Amadores, Arguineguin and Taurito.
The town boasts an attractive beach of Saharan sand with sheltered waters providing pleasant and safe bathing. Lifeguards are present and water sports including jet skiing, towed inflatables and paddle boats available. A supermarket and various shops are located nearby with a number of bars, restaurants and tolled bathroom and shower facilities facing onto the beach. The beach can become extremely busy during summer weekends when the island's resident population visit. Nearby Amadores provides another larger and also very attractive beach within twenty minutes walking distance.
The town's port provides a number of sea excursions including whale and dolphin spotting, deep sea fishing and pleasure cruises. Excursions vary in quality and duration and variably provide inclusive food, refreshments and alcoholic beverages. It is advisable checking in advance exactly what will be provided and asking disembarking vacationers of their experience.
The resort is built within a steep valley surrounded by villas and hotels, modern in appearance and well maintained. Development began in the 1960's with few high rise buildings and consistent town planning.
Restaurants are abundant offering international and traditional food. The standard of cuisine is generally good though one should avoid establishments with overly pushy promotional staff. Gran Canaria's traditional food is recommended with fresh fish a speciality. The adventurous traveller seeking out the locally favoured establishments is rewarded with good value for money and quality. Tapas bars provide a good way to experiment with new flavours.
Shopping offers duty free alcoholic beverages and tobacco but better bargains are to be found traveling by bus to the island's capital city, Las Palmas or the town of Vecindario which has a very large shopping centre. Care should be taken if buying electronic, photographic and designer goods from local shopping malls with some visitors falling victim to counterfeit goods or those not fit for purpose and refused a refund. Window shoppers may be lured with good prices, informed the item is out of stock and sold an alternative which proves not to include the same features.
Nightlife is fairly lively with a number of shopping malls offering lively bars with a strong presence of British, Norwegian and German visitors evident in internationally themed bars. For those seeking a more vibrant nightlife Spain's largest resort, Playa del Ingles, is reached by a twenty minute bus journey. A late night return journey by taxi is good value for four passengers sharing.
