    Common Skin Reactions

    • The most common side effects associated with Protopic are skin reactions at the application site. These include burning, itching, redness, soreness, stinging and tingling. Often these side effects disappear after the first few days.

    Serious Skin Effects

    • Skin infections or sores may occur during Protopic use, but they are rare. These infections include signs of chickenpox, shingles, blisters, genital herpes, cold sores or warts. These reactions should be reported promptly to a doctor.

    Other Side Effects

    • People using Protopic also have reported acne, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, nasal congestion, skin sensitivity to temperature, upset stomach and nausea.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Although unlikely, some patients may experience an allergic reaction to Protopic. Signs are rash or hives, difficulty breathing, and facial or mouth swelling.

    Possible Cancer Risk

    • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received rare reports of cancer, including skin cancer and lymphoma, associated with long-term use of Protopic or other calcineurin inhibitors.
