Ethical Clothing - But What About the Environment?

25
Many of us are now aware of where our clothes and other products come from.
We are aware that many mass produced clothes can often come from dubious practices.
Child labour and other unethical practices are no being stamped out throughout the fashion industry but what about the environment? Many of our clothes are manufactured from natural materials.
Cotton is still one of the most commonly used materials in clothing manufacture and while fair trade cotton is available to endure the people in the cotton industry are not being exploited but what about the environment? Much of our natural materials, like cotton, are grown using powerful fertilizers and pesticides and unlike food production these chemicals are often harsher as the cotton is obviously not going to be eaten.
However, the damaging effects of these chemicals on the environment could still be taking its toll in generations to come.
Thankfully more organic clothing companies and eco friendly clothes producers are aware of this and are producing eco friendly clothing and organic clothes.
Organic cotton is now becoming more and more common with organic cotton clothes being available from may stores.
But other materials are now being used which are fare more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Believe it or not, one of these is bamboo.
Bamboo clothing is just as soft as cotton but comes from aqn incredibly sustainable source.
Bamboo is a grass and one of the fastest growing plants on earth.
For that reason there is little need to encourage its growth with fertilisers or protect it from pests with other chemicals.
But bamboo clothing has other benefits too.
Bamboo has natural thermo-sensitive properties, in other words it can help keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter which is why it is often used in activewaer.
Bamboo active wear is incredibly popular now with all sorts of sports clothing such as bamboo yogawear being worn across the globe.
Bamboo clothing and organic cotton clothing are just two examples of how the environmentally friendly movement is helping to find more sustainable and practical solutions to our consumer needs.
