To Paint the Exterior Metal in Windows

• 1). Strip old paint from the window by applying chemical stripper with an old paint brush.
  
  
• 2). Scrape the old paint off with a scraper when it starts to peel. Make sure that all the old paint, as well as the stripper, has been removed.
  
  
• 3). Sand down any rusted areas.
  
  
• 4). Apply chromate primer or another mild acid that deactivates rust. This primer also creates a etched adhesive surface that allows the paint to stick to it.
  
  
• 5). Apply masking tape around the window, both along the outside of the frame and on the glass itself to avoid damage from drips or blotches.
  
  Place a drop cloth or old newspaper on the ground.
  
  
• 6). Apply an undercoat of paint. This can be some of the regular paint itself, thinned with turpentine.
  
  
• 7). Paint the windows. A good acrylic latex exterior paint is recommended.
  
  

To Paint the Interior Metal in Windows

• 1). Remove old caulking and sealants around the window where the frame meets the glass.
  
  
• 2). Replace the caulking and sealants with new product. If the window isn't sealed properly, condensation will build up on the glass and eventually ruin the new paint.
  
  
• 3). Wash the metal with soap and water. Dry thoroughly.
  
  
• 4). Sand the surface lightly. Sand out any rust spots. Use a wire brush to remove any rust if necessary.
  
  
• 5). Apply a mild acidic primer to deactivate any rust.
  
  
• 6). Apply masking tape around the window frame to prevent the paint from getting on the surrounding walls.
  
  Apply masking tape around the glass as well.
  
  Place a drop cloth or old newspaper on the floor to catch the drippings.
  
  
• 7). Apply an undercoat of paint, especially if a gloss paint or latex will be used.
  
  Paint directly on the primer after it has dried.
  
  
• 8). Paint directly on the metal surface if rubber based paint, aluminum paint or catalyzed enamel paint will be used. No primer is necessary for these kinds of paint.
