Ethnic Hair Types
- Generally, ethnic hair types are divided into two categories: Asian or oriental hair and African or Caribbean hair.
- Asian hair is almost always straight, but sometimes can have a slight natural wave. It is considered the strongest hair type of the two. African hair is susceptible to damage due to its twisted hair shaft and its tendency to tangle easily.
- African hair, along with most curly hair types, is prone to dryness. Extra conditioning is needed, especially if it is chemically relaxed. Asian hair, thanks to its strength, can be grown incredibly long without breakage.
- Asian hair types often need stronger styling products due to the strength of the hair. It doesn't curl easily, so straight styles are usually best. There are entire lines of specific hair-care products devoted to African hair and its needs.
- Asian hair types lend themselves well to razor cuts because of their straight and strong texture. According to executives at John Frieda, 70 percent of African-American women relax their hair.
