Sunrise River Wild Boar Hunting Knife
About.com Rating
The Bottom Line
As usual, Jay Maines of Sunrise River Custom Knives has created a very practical, very attractive knife that is just about perfect for the intended use. Despite its length (15.5" overall in sheath), it rides comfortably on my hip when chasing dogs and hogs through the Florida swamps - and it looks great at the same time. A very tough, sharp, rugged, and attractive knife that can be custom-ordered to suit the buyer.

Guide Review - Sunrise River Wild Boar Hunting Knife
Now THAT'S a Knife!
This custom hog hunting knife is a beauty and a workhorse too. It's not ideal for all hunting use - it's just too big - but it does work well for many things, and excels at its intended use: stabbing hogs.
I carried it on several hunts, and though I didn't take one with it myself, it did slay a couple of hogs... and we used it quite a bit for heavy, bone-chopping work when quartering several hogs and a deer, including some porkers weighing more than 400 pounds. It has not been sharpened since I received it, but still sports a very sharp edge.
The finger lug on mine is a great addition. The guard keeps your hand from slipping forward when stabbing, and the lug provides a good grip for pulling it back out, so it won't slip when your hands are slick from swamp water, sweat, blood, or all of the above.
This knife is built to last, and easily handles tough jobs like chopping through ribs or tough joints. For that purpose I highly recommend the finger lug, as blood and fat can slick up your hands in a hurry. And, like any knife, it works for smaller jobs - just not as easily as a smaller knife.
All in all, this is an excellent knife and I recommend it to any hog hunter, or anyone who just needs a good, heavy knife. The two fellows who killed their hogs with it were very impressed and pleased with it. Every hunter who has seen it has drooled on it to some extent - but it ain't hurt... it's stainless.
It's a great knife, one that even Crocodile Dundee would be proud to own.
