    • 1). Apply for Medicaid. Every US state, territory and DC have government funded health insurance for pregnant women. The minimum requirement is a household income of less than 133% of the current poverty level. However, more than half of states have much more lenient standards and many women with savings, equity in homes, and a higher household income can qualify. Visit the State Health Facts website and click on your state. Then find the word "medicaid" and click again. Look for CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program) since pregnant mothers fall under this program. Finally, find proof of your income from last year's tax return and apply.

    • 2). Apply for a Maternity Discount Program. There are several maternity discount programs where pregnant mothers can receive medical care for up to 60% off. In the end this will may still be costly, but not compared to a women without insurance. There are two major discount programs recommended by the American Pregnancy Association entitled Maternity Advantage and AmeriPlan.

    • 3). Apply for private health insurance. Some major health insurance companies will insure pregnant women. Most offer individual health plans with many different options of co-payments and deductibles. Private health insurance companies include, but not limited to, Carefirst, Kaiser, and Aetna. You will probably need to have a physical or form filled out by your current primary care doctor to prove you don't have preexisting conditions other than pregnancy that may exclude you from their policies.
