A Going Green Checklist

24

    At Home

    • Of course, the best way to go green in the home is by recycling, but there are many other ways. Use regular dishes instead of Styrofoam, paper or plastic as much as possible. Make your own environmentally-friendly cleaners. Compost piles cut down on waste, as do keeping your electronics as long as possible, and recycling or donating them when you upgrade, or when they are no longer usable. Solar panels, dark screens and using florescent lights cuts down on electric usage.

    In the Yard

    • Your yard can virtually become a produce section at home, with a little work. Grow your own herbs instead of buying them packaged in the supermarket. Same with vegetables, which generally need plastic and foam packing. Only water in the early morning or late evening, and set timers on your faucets to keep from over-watering. Instead of buying lawn mowers and other equipment, borrow what you can, or work out a deal with friends where everyone has one kind of equipment and you all share.

    At the Office

    • At work, eliminate or reduce the amount of coffee cups, disposable plates and other throw-away items you use. Purchase mugs and plates and a bottle of dish soap to considerably cut down on office waste. Only print papers you absolutely need. Reuse file folders, boxes and other office supplies as much as possible. Purchase recycled paper. Shut computers and other machinery down after hours. Instead of throwing out old computers and other equipment, donate them to schools or recycle centers that take electronics.

    On the Go

    • With rising gas prices, taking your bike is becoming more of a necessity than an idea. When you do take the car, drive the speed limit. Plan your routes so you can travel the shortest distance possible and only run errands one day a week. Check into telecommuting or ride sharing if you have a long drive to work. When you stop somewhere, even if for a short while, don't leave your car idling. These efforts reduce your carbon footprint.
