How to Repay a Road Home Elevation Grant
- 1). Determine the exact amount of money that must be repaid. Check your personal records for a contract or other document indicating the amount of money granted specifically for elevation costs. Contact the Office of Community Development, Disaster Recovery Unit (successor to the Louisiana Recovery Authority) to request an official statement indicating the amount owed, including any penalties or interest due, and compare that amount to your records.
- 2). Dispute any erroneous charges. Grant money is generally not expected to be repaid. However, if the terms of the grant are violated, the Louisiana Recovery Authority can demand repayment. Nevertheless, only the grant money related to the home elevation can be demanded for repayment. So make certain that you do not repay grant money that was given for other purposes (for example, for home reconstruction).
- 3). Set up a repayment plan. If you cannot repay the grant in a lump sum, request a repayment plan. Calculate the maximum monthly amount you can afford, ask that your payments not exceed that amount and get the terms in writing.
- 4). Begin repayment. Submit monthly payments on time and in the full amount. Keep records of all payments made.
