How to Wear a Skirt as a Dress

26
    • 1). Try a cotton A-line skirt that falls to mid-calf and has a thick waistband that folds so you can adjust the length in different ways. Check the bathing suit department of discount stores for simple, inexpensive coverups that will have the right silhouette. Lift it up so that the band lies flat and covers your chest and it instantly turns into a simple strapless dress. You can also fold the waistband over your chest so that the "dress" is a mini.

    • 2). Select a long elastic-waist skirt that falls in soft folds. You can find these skirts in department stores such as Macy's (listed in the Resources section below), as well as in specialty shops. Hike the skirt's waist band to above your chest. This will give you a modern flowy strapless dress. Adjust it to get the length that flatters you best. Tie a sash or ribbon on your chest to cover the waistband and let the ties hang to finish off the look.

    • 3). Buy a knit tube skirt that is easy to wear above your chest. The very straight line will give you a flattering fit. Pair it with a cropped shrug to give more definition in the top and waist area for a slimming effect. Try stores like H&M or New York & Company (listed in the Resources section) for a good selection.

    • 4). Find an above the ankle-length ethnic print skirt in a crinkly fabric. Pull it up to your chest and you will have a very versatile dress that can go anywhere. Pair with flip flops and a jean jacket for a casual feel, or add a choker or long beaded necklace, a shawl and high-heeled sandals for an evening out. Look at Forever 21 and similar trendy shops for choices.

    • 5). Invest in a sleek black silk skirt that you can wear as a dress. Add a wide belt and boots and a cardigan for day, or pearls and high heels for the evening. St. John's (see the Resource section below) double knit fabric works well for this. You can also get a similar effect with microfiber.

    • 6). Wear any of these skirt-dresses over a bathing suit, tank top, long sleeve T-shirt or turtleneck to make it work for different seasons. This will also give you extra coverage in case the band should slip.

    • 7). Change the look of any skirt-dress by adding a slim V-neck sweater layered over it so the fabric shows at the chest and below the top's hem. Try a blazer for a more tailored effect.

    • 8). Wear a skirt-dress that is very short with skinny jeans or leggings so you don't show more than you intend.
