What Will it Take to Make That Cigarette Your Final Smoke?

14
Anybody who has tried to quit smoking and been successful at it knows it is an uphill battle ...
not just a simple decision that you make and then act upon.
While some people are able to just "decide" to quit and then do it, the vast majority of smokers try time and time again to break the habit and fail.
Peter Jennings, former anchor for ABC News, was able to quit smoking for almost 20 years ...
and then started smoking again on 9/11, dying of lung cancer a few years later.
He lost his focus and fell back onto a bad habit.
So what is the secret that a growing number of long-time smokers find that allows them to quit? What is it that enables them to put out a cigarette and say, "That was my final smoke?" Here are several things you need to do in order to break your nicotine habit ...
or any habit, for that matter.
Find Your "Why" You need to know "why" you are quitting.
Without a motivator, success is just a dream.
Motivation is different for everyone and can come in many forms.
It may be the death of a close friend or family member, or a health scare of your own.
Or it may be as simple as your child asking, "Will you still be around for my kids if you keep smoking?" Find your "why" and hang on for dear life! Have Daily Reinforcement Sometimes your motivator will be sufficient to keep you going.
But oftentimes, additional reinforcement is needed on a daily basis.
Some people swear by subliminal messages.
Others prefer audio that they can hear and will maybe even come up with their own mantra.
Still others need the visual aid of a book or pamphlet that reinforces what they are reaching for.
Make A New Habit Many ex-smokers substitute the hand-to-mouth activity of smoking with increased eating or constant gum-chewing, replacing one bad habit with another.
Try instead to find something useful and productive to do.
What are some things you were NOT able to do as a smoker that you will now be able to do? Walk up a flight of stairs, start jogging, take a deep breath without having a coughing fit, enjoy smelling a rose.
Smoking is more than just a habit.
It is a psychological addiction and requires more help to successfully quit.
According to American Cancer Society spokesman David Sampson, "You can double your chances of success if you use anything to help you.
" Take charge of your health now.
