How to Do Square Roots in 7th Grade Math

23
    • 1). Memorize the perfect squares from 1 through 225. A perfect square is what results when a number is squared. For example, 81 is a perfect square, equal to 9 * 9. Memorizing these will help you find more complex square roots quickly.

    • 2). Factor the number under the square root symbol such that at least one of the factors is a perfect square.

      For example, if you are asked to find the square root of 363:

      363 = 3 * 121

      If there are more factors that are perfect squares, be sure to find all of them.

    • 3). Take the square root of the factor that is a perfect square. Place this number outside of the square root sign. Multiply the remaining square root by this number. This will be the simplest way of writing the square root.

      For example, if you are finding the square root of 363:

      root(363) = root(3*121) = 11 * root(3)
